Shidara Taiko is known for its masterful stick work and soulful harmonies of shinobue bamboo flutes in evoking the spiritual essence of ancient times.

Group members live and train at a Japanese mountain facility in strictest, 24-hour, traditional discipline. In addition to their professional pursuits, Shidara Taiko members are committed to preserving the ancient dance festivals in its region.

“We’re so pleased to host the world-renowned Shidara Taiko ensemble in New Mexico,” said New Mexico Tech’s Performing Arts Series Director, Ronna Kalish. “They’ve earned amazing reviews for the quality and variety of their performances,” she said. “And they’re traveling with 3,000 pounds of drums–from Japan!” Shidara Taiko’s current U.S. “Heart of the Immortal Mountain” tour includes a rendition of the Hana Matsuri Festival, a 730-year-old harvest ritual designated as a Japanese National Folk Property.

“Through our performance we hope to bring people together, joining hands in reciprocal support while walking an essential path of mutual encouragement,” a group member is quoted as saying, adding:

“This is much as was done at ancient festivals, where circles of human harmony were created, born of a spirit of gratitude to the earth and natural world.”
