[pengwen note: Madeline Gutwein captured the charm of a New Mexcio retreat in her photograph of the Santuario de Chimayo in Chimayo. And the picture captured our hearts for this issue’s cover. This article was submitted for Cibola Arts Gallery.]

Mountainair– Madeline Gutwein is the newest member of Cibola Arts. She recently moved from Indiana and now calls Mountainair her home. Madeline is an artist who captures her love for nature and the great outdoors in her photography.
After working 30 years in the insurance industry developing her skill and reputation as a photographer on the side, she left the insurance business. “I wasn’t meant to sit at a desk, it goes against my nature,” Madeline said with a smile. Her father and paternal grandparents were seed corn farmers in the fertile Indiana soil and her maternal grandparents were rock hounds in Arizona. Madeline, a master gardener intern, enjoys the best of both worlds, learning the tricks of desert gardening while collecting beautiful rocks to adorn her gardens.
Madeline’s photography skills blossomed when she started visiting National Parks throughout the United States. The Parks provided a wonderful opportunity for photography while feeding her soul in the great outdoors. She has won over 30 photography awards including being a finalist in an All Media Show in the Midwestern States by the Municipal Art League in Chicago, Il., and first place in the Mountainair Chamber of Commerce Photography Contest.
Madeline has many framed photographs and greeting cards on display at the gallery. Some of her work is printed on canvas while others have been altered through the aid of software to resemble vibrant, impressionist paintings.
