Hundreds of tourists and families from as far away as Farmington 450 miles to the northwest visited the farm with Moms and grandmas in tow and eagerly bought both spring and early-fall blooming Irises to beautify their yards and gardens. The gardens were breathtaking throughout this period with hundreds of Iris varieties blooming in a spectacular rainbow of living color. There are no words to describe Hondo Iris Farms’ gardens in the spring and early summer. The Garden of Eden couldn’t have been more lovely. You have to visit the place and see for yourself what we’re talking about.

Now, as the Iris blossoms of spring gradually fade, they’re being replaced by blooming day lilies, a dazzling array of poppies in a riot of colors plus many varieties of roses too. There’s never a charge to enter or use of the facilities here. Visitors are invited to wander through the rows of plants, watch the fish in the pond, enjoy the beautiful scenery, bring a picnic lunch and eat at a table in the woods, sit on the hummingbird porch and count the birds, listen to the fountain, or smell the roses, and visit the gallery.

Speaking of the gallery, be sure to visit artist Alice Seely’s nearby Jewelry Factory and Show Room which features copyrighted lead-free pewter jewelry designs that sell at much higher prices in exclusive galleries, museum gift shops and retail stores from New York to Los Angeles than

Visitors are invited to wander through the rows of plants, watch the fish in the pond, enjoy the beautiful scenery, bring a picnic lunch and eat at a table in the woods...

they do at the Hondo factory store. The gallery’s main entrance features Alice’s jewelry which is sold in many locations in the U.S. and Canada. The jewelry is hand made at the Iris Farm Annex on Highway 70, at mile marker 286 (open Tuesday- Friday, 8-5, for free factory tours.) All jewelry is available, at both locations, at factory discount prices.

While you’re in Hondo, be sure to visit Alice’s ‘unique boutique’ which offers home décor items and a large selection of beautiful handmade women’s fashions – including silk and lace designs – for ladies ranging from petite to plus-size and beyond. Many of the gossamer-thin materials in the popular fashions sold here are imported all the way from the desert highlands of India especially for the large and lovely ladies of New Mexico to enjoy.

The gardens at Hondo Iris Farms offer a beautiful and relaxing stop that is tucked away and nearly invisible in the cool shade of the Hondo River Valley, just a few yards from U.S. Highways 380 / 70. The farm is located about 24 miles east of Ruidoso at mile Marker 284 on U.S. Highway 70. That’s roughly 48 miles west of Roswell near the highway 380 and 70 split.
