Chisum Days Festival and Rodeo
Ready to Ride in Roswell June 6 - 8
By Joyce Berkner - Steppin' Out Southeast Region Representative
The sparkling blue Irish eyes of Maureen McGinn smile at me from under the brim of her black cowboy hat, as we greet one another with a warm handshake. I knew in a minute I had just shaken hands with the heart and soul of the old west and cowboy culture.

A long standing member of the Chaves County Rodeo Association, she is active in promoting Old Chisum Days in Roswell NM.

Come experience the excitement of that grand-scale western life during the Old Chisum Days.

The star attraction this year is the highly competitive Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Rodeo PRCA Rodeo June 6, 7 & 8th.

Get ready for the rodeo when they herd in the cattle: On Friday, June 6th the 100 head of cattle will be driven along into Roswell in the true style of the old west. The cowboys and the cattle will cross Main and Brasher sometime during the day on Friday, says Maureen McGinn. She could not be specific about the time because, as she said, it all depends on the cattle. “Sometimes they move right along and then again the cowboys have to shag the ones who like to wander away from the herd. “

Plan to make the Visitor and Information Booth at Old Chisum Days one of your first stops to learn about all the other events surrounding the PRCA Rodeo. You will see friendly faces and welcoming smiles anyplace around Old Chisum Days as that is just how it was back then and the folks of the Chaves County Rodeo Association and all of Roswell invite you to step back in time and enjoy good old western hospitality.

Chisum was a prominent Roswell citizen and his ranch was known as the Jinglebob Ranch because of his unique marking and branding technique for his cattle. The ear on each of his cattle was split so the lower part hung down and bobbed as the cattle moved thus all of John Chisum’s cattle were easily recognized. Tours of the historic Jinglebob Ranch will be offered as part of this fun, family-oriented event.

You will want to follow your nose as the delicious aroma of Dutch Oven Cooking wafts though the air. The second annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off will be a one of the many events scheduled during this celebration of the old west. For more details on this event contact Debra Peacock at 575-760-8918.

There’ll be music and dancing and arts and crafts booths as well. So bring the family and enjoy.

If you happen to see a beautiful lady with a big black cowboy hat be sure to shake hands with Maureen McGinn. You will be glad you did.
