The show will run through July 17th.

Joel Smith, an abstract oil painter, offers this personal statement concerning his work:

“When I paint abstract art, there is no preconception. Rather I start with a brush mark on the canvas. Then another mark is made that reacts in harmony or in contrast. The painting is a process, a state of becoming, or spontaneous strokes that allow the organic impetus to emerge. Some of these strokes may partially eliminate existing shapes so that creativity is activated by destruction and construction until the painting arrives at its own persona, its own statement about the wonder and paradox that is life.

“My goal with my paintings is to order symbolic fragments into a state of pure painting. They are not concerned with a description of the seen world rather they are involved with the mystery of the human experience. <table border=0 align=left><tr><td width=210><caption><font size=-1 face="Arial Narrow" color=#000000>Some strokes may partially eliminate existing shapes so that creativity is activated by destruction and construction until the painting arrives at its own persona, its own statement about the wonder and paradox that is life.</font></caption><img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/gallery_408_joelsmith_dynamicinterchange.jpg border=1 align=left vspace=5 hspace=5 alt="Some strokes may partially eliminate existing shapes so that creativity is activated by destruction and construction until the painting arrives at its own persona, its own statement about the wonder and paradox that is life."></td></tr></table>Our ambiguities and contradictions are isolated into a pictorial form that can be contemplated. A form where multiple meanings may be examined, where shifting states of consciousness are engaged. My oil paintings do not represent emotion, they transcend it.”

Joel Smith's teaching experience includes such prestigious schools as Ohio State University, University of Texas, University of California at Berkeley. His work is in collections from the Museum of Modern Art, New York to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

A Wine Reception will be held June 21st from 5:00 to 7:00pm

Live music will be provided by Silver and Wood, the combined musical talents of Elaine Brannen and Sherry Savas. The duo will play chamber music in the sculpture garden.
