And nestled on the highway curve at the village south end is the legendary Johnson’s Gallery. Mel and Diana Johnson packed up their young family and ended up in this abandoned coal mining town in the early 70’s. Both with Art Institute of Chicago degrees, the gutsy couple moved into the big car-and-truck repair garages and thus began a long journey of remodeling and building their gallery that is the centerpiece of Madrid and home for over 100 artists and 50 fiber artists, mostly from the Southwest.
Diana Johnson, a fashion designer, devotes one large room in the gallery for her garments with the 50 other fiber artists. During July and August, she has designated two gallery rooms for silk (“Wearable and Wallable”) In another gallery, two New Mexico art quilters will be exhibited. They will be on hand to show and talk about their work on Saturday, August 2. from 3-5pm.
