Mountainair – The Cibola Arts Gallery in Mountainair, NM, announces a show of new works by the featured artist, Shirley Simmons. The new works will include plein-air studies as well as nature interpretations from her studio. Shirley uses rich color combinations in a variety of nature themes. The show will open on June 7th with a reception from 2- 4pm. The public is invited to the reception to meet or renew acquaintance with the artist. The show will hang until July 3rd. Cibola Arts Gallery is located at 217 Broadway, near the Post Office, in Mountainair, NM.
Shirley’s home and studio are located near the National Forest boundary above Torreon. All are relieved that she and her husband’s house survived the inferno that moved up to their valley on March 30. About this Shirley says “ I am a painter fascinated with color and I like to respond to the shapes, light and space in nature in an impressionistic way. I am so thankful to have my house spared by the fire, and to still have our valley and view for inspiration. The “black and white” of the burn scars are hard to look at. I am sorry for the land and for the people on the damaged land. This is a part of nature I need to get used to.”
Shirley has been active in art activities in and around Mountainair for many years and was a founding member of the Cibola Arts Gallery, a co-operative gallery of local artists. She has also been active in the Art Etc. group in Mountainair. It is a group of artists that meet weekly to produce art together, experiment and learn.
Oil Painting is the medium that is taught and championed by Shirley, as well as “true” color and color combinations. She calls her paintings “visual meditations” and paintings in this show will be in oil on canvas and on panels.

The show, called “Transforming From Landscapes to Portraits” will open on July 5th with a reception from 2 - 4: pm.
Deb Vetterman has been drawing sensuous land-shapes for some thirty years; composition, form, flow, have been a strong component in her art work. As form evolves it has taken her to the human face. This has lent itself to her reintroduction to painting and learning its application to the creation and movement of form.
