Carrizozo – Okay, maybe it’s hokey, but remember “The Little Engine That Could?”
The story just seems appropriate for Carrizozo. Not just because of the obvious connection with this town’s railroading history.
This town just refuses to give up. In fact, while businesses and townspeople may change, there’s a persistence that prevails. At least in the art community. This little town at the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains attracts quality artists and visionaries who have worked to make this an arts community.
One such visionary was John West (1930-2000). The son of WPA artist Hal West, John grew up in the vibrant Santa Fe art scene and at the age of 14 began to make jewelry out of copper scraps and bits of turquoise from the old Tiffany mines near the family ranch. John developed a reputation for his art while he developed his ideas for a planned art community.
John and his wife Ann Buffington West moved to Lincoln County in the late ’70s and to Carrizozo in 1993 renovating old adobes in several locales.
“John was always striving to increase the bonds of community and cooperative living,” said his widow in an interview after her husband’s death. “He wanted people to share more, help each other more, connect more.” John saw in Carrizozo, she said, the ideal artists’ community… sharing and supporting each other with the kind of creative cross-fertilization and stimulation that comes in a close community of creative people.”
John’s legacy is continuing. Former Carrizozo residents artist Gary Eklund and wife Sharon opened Zozo Gallery and worked to make 12th Street into an art avenue. Now, Warren and Joan Malkerson have stepped in to further develop the 12th Street venues for a variety of art.
Gallery 408 and the former Studios on 12 St flank the lovely sculpture garden. Now, they are finishing the renovation of the former Carrizozo Hardware building now Gallery 401 Antiques. Upstairs, the beautiful old wood floors have been refinished, the rooms repainted and turned into studios with room for classrooms and lounging areas.
First Classes set in new Studios
The first class to be held in the new location is a figure drawing class on Thursday, Aug. 14 from 9 am to noon.
“This next Figure Drawing Session, (August 14th) will be your opportunity to see this wonderful space. The building has been in renovation for the last two and a half years and is now ready for you and all the fantastic classes that Gallery 408 will be offering in the months and years to come,” says Alisa Kenyon, gallery manager. “This is an exciting time for Gallery 408 and The Studios on 12th Street so we want to make it even more special by treating you to a luncheon in our new space. Please call the Gallery at 648-2598 or email us at gallery408@tularosa.net so that we can make a special place at the table for you.
