In four short years, ¡Globalquerque! has become one of the top world-music festivals in the American Southwest, says the Arizona Star.
Anyone who doesn’t believe that statement, needs to read former Albuquerque Tribune columnist Eric Griego’s May 14 ’07 article which takes fellow Querqueans to task for not taking in the quality art and history available In the area.
“A trip to Los Angeles or New York usually includes taking in a show or a museum. However, most Albuquerqueans haven’t been to the flamenco festival, Globalquerque or Revolutions. That’s too bad, because when it comes to world-class arts and culture in a hometown setting, Albuquerque is becoming the place to be. See for yourself.”
Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, the world comes to the National Hispanic Cultural Center with world class musicians and dance performers day and night and a wealth of free fun for all ages during the day.
Acclaimed Mexican-American diva Lila Downs headlines the show on Friday, Sept 19. Downs gained international attention for her musical role in the award-winning 2002 film Frida. Soukous superstar Kanda Bongo Man from the Democratic Republic of Congo will headline the festival on Saturday, Sept 20.
The world-spanning roster includes Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure (son of Ali Farka Touré). Artists from the Southwest and the Americas feature double-Grammy winning Native-American flutist Mary Youngblood (Seminole/Aleut), electronica trendsetters Mexican Institute Of Sound (Mexico), Brazilian party music of Forro In The Dark ; prayerful Hopi songs from Clark Tenakhongva (Hopi/USA), and the dynamic French-Canadian trio Genticorum (Quebec).
Berlin, Israel, Marseilles, Swedish folk-pop and Mediterranean, Asia and the Pacifics also are represented musically.
During the day, a host of informative, fun events can capture the hearts and creative minds of all ages with dance, drumming, and musical instrument making workshops, special presentations and special area tours.
The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Art Museum will be free and open to the public. In addition Clan tinker will be roaming around entertaining folks; or help paint a mural with Albert Rosales and friends.
¡Globalquerque! takes place at Albuquerque’s beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center, a unique arts center encompassing 50 acres nestled along the Rio Grande River. A staggered evening schedule allows music lovers to sample the broadest range of performances and in a variety settings. A weeklong, statewide celebration of international culture leads up to the festival. This wonderful global event is the vision and hard work of promoters Tom Frounge and Neal Copperman who just do an outstanding job.
