Belen – Valencia County has a long history of living on the land. And the annual Rio Abajo Days celebrates that history in the prime of the harvest season at the end of September.
This year’s celebration is Sept. 26-28 at the Valencia County Fairgrounds (I-25, exti 195) and includes lots of family fun. Events include traditional sports such as bull riding, barrel racing and team roping, and more unusual events such as mutton busting, draft horse pull and mule and donkey events.
Other activities run from marathons to a petting zoo and carnival. Stroll around to view the arts and crafts booths and enjoy a dutch oven dinner. Continuous entertainment make this a great event.
