El Paso, Tex – The prestigious Arts International show opens at the Main Library on Friday, Oct. 3 with a gala celebration and awards presentation. The show is open to the public Oct. 4- 23 during regular library hours. The main downtown library is located at 501 N. Oregon (Frankin & Oregon Streets).
This show, which attracts artists from Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mex., is El Paso Art Association’s major fundraiser each year. Over 230 entries were received in 2007 with 200 works selected for exhibit. Best of Show winner Willibald de Cabrera’s Children at the Museum transports you to that time and space in a fresh, super-realistic manner. It’s just stunning ¬ as are the other 19 award winners. (View them at http://artsinternat.com)
The juried exhibit offers awards, recognition and some special awards including the sponsor-funded “Guaranteed Purchase” award and eight juror recognition awards.
Magdalena’s Warren Smart was noted as an “Artist to Watch” in 2006 and split the guaranteed purchase award in 2007. Then in May, he was the El Paso Art Association’s (EPAA) Crossland Gallery featured artist.
We got a chance to visit the Crossland Gallery at 500 West Paisano and the upstairs Art Junction, in the large renovated industrial building just off I-10. It’s a lovely, large gallery downstairs (large enough to accommodate almost 50 of Warren’s large paintings!). Upstairs, artists’ studios wind around classroom spaces and and lounging areas. Some great art being made upstairs!
EPAA also sponsors a cooperative gallery, Sunland Art Gallery, in the Sunland Park Mall, 750 Sunland Park Dr. The gallery showcases original artwork of members. Visit in person at the Mall or go online to view and purchase artwork at sunlandartgallery.com
This dedicated group of people including Joyce Ewald, office administrator and her staff and volunteers, sponsor numerous classes, demonstrations and exhibits. Among other duties current EPAA president Don Beene is on the Arts International Committee.
EPAA each year gives youth scholarships as part of its mission. EPAA is dedicated to the promotion and achievement of Fine Art.
For more information about EPAA or the Arts International, call 915.534.7377 or visit them online elpasoartassociation.com. There you can see the quality of art from last year’s Arts International and know that this year’s will be equally exceptional.
