Socorro – Karyn DeBont admits she likes to paint flowers best. That’s not surprising for a woman whose career is the planting and feeding of fresh flowers to fill the flower beds at the New Mexico Tech campus.
Karyn’s oil painting titled simply “Morning Glories” is the featured art on the cover of the October and November issue of Steppin’ Out.
Karyn has been taking art classes at Tech for about five years, after reading an article about art teacher Midge Grace in the local newspaper.
The Thursday morning class is “my mental health break,” says Karyn. Her works have appeared in various class exhibits at Macey Center and the Socorro Chamber of Commerce.
Her painting of orange Emperor tulips took first place at the recent Socorro County fair while her painting “Sinking Boat” was awarded “Best of Show in the amateur division. That work was painted from a picture she took this summer during a family trip to Venice.
So when is she going to go “professional?” Karyn laughs: “I have a day job,” she replies. “And I have a teenager.
“ Besides, I read seed catalogues like some people read newspapers or comics. If I wasn’t working, I would miss going through all these catalogues and picking the seeds for next year.”
So happily, Socorro folks will continue to see Karyn, kneeling over a flower bed with her employees, planting the new, seasonal flowers around the Tech campus. And Karyn is happy, finding the prettiest flowers, snapping a digital photo of them and rendering that onto the canvas.
Look for her work in the November Socorro Arts Show at Macey Center.
