There’s plenty to enjoy around town. Take the time to explore a bit and you’ll find some interesting shops and staples to leave even the discerning visitor satisfied.

This autumn welcomes the 20th anniversary of Uncle Walters and one-year anniversary of Alpine Alley. These are just two of the businesses that add to the quaint and unique attraction of Mountainair.

Uncle Walter’s Thrift Store, owned by Kenneth and Dolores Aguilar, celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. The store is named after Ken’s uncle, a man who also owned a variety store and taught Ken important lessons about telling right from wrong. As a youngster, Ken spent many hours with Uncle Walter. He learned from him how to run a good, honest business. The store carries a variety of items, from tools, house wares and office supplies to gifts and toys. Adjacent to the retail side of the store is a resale area which offers deals on furniture, accessories, and collectibles. Currently, a large selection of reasonably priced shelving units fills the west wall. Uncle Walter’s provides locals the convenience of nearby shopping, and always delivers service with smile. If you can’t find what you need, just ask. You’ll often be happily surprised to have Uncle Walter’s staff find exactly what you’re looking for. Hours: Monday- Thursday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday & Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Closed Sundays Phone: (505)847-2995

For many years, Mary Ivey has envisioned running a gathering place that would encourage conversation in a homey setting. With this idea in mind she created what she calls “a meeting place with coffee as the connection.” November will be the Alpine Alley’s one-year anniversary, giving Mary confirmation that her dream has become reality. Alpine Alley has wall and shelf space for showcasing a variety of artists’ work, and graciously hosts impromptu musical guests. Serving breakfast and lunch, with a variety of specials and fresh baked goodies daily, Alpine Alley keeps customers coming back for more. Locals can gather for a meal and casual conversation. Visitors to Mountainair are welcomed and often persuaded to join in on the conversation. Workers from the new Wind Farm Project can enjoy the chance to taste homemade soups and stews they might miss while out in the field. It only took a few months for the word to spread and for Alpine Alley to be filled with customers. Mary’s husband Scott closed his alignment shop in town to team up with her at the Coffeehouse and has never looked back.

Stop in for their comfortable décor, hearty sandwiches, and a variety of coffee & tea delights. Or, contact them to cater your next party.
