<img src="http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/images/Skeeter_BlueCranes.jpg" align=right border=1>San Antonio NM - Festival of the Cranes 2008 theme artist Elli Sorenson and award-winning Socorro painter Skeeter Leard (www.skeeterart.com (http://www.skeeterart.com/)) will be among five artists, craftsmen and photographers displaying works at a reception Oct. 4 from 1-4 pm in the visitor center at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The reception, an annual event at the refuge, spotlights some of the local artists and artisans whose work captures the spirit of the refuge and its wildlife. Light refreshments will be provided by Mac’s Hot Sauce and A&J Family Farms.
Sorenson’s oil painting of singing Sandhill Cranes silhouetted against a Van Gogh-esque background of sky and water is featured on posters, literature and merchandise for this year’s Nov. 18-23 festival. Sorenson has recently shifted her focus from the wildlife and landscapes of the Jackson Hole, WY, area to New Mexico. She now works from a studio in San Lorenzo in the Mimbres Valley. She is represented in select galleries in the Southwest. Also discussing their work at the reception will be Socorro woodcut and origami artists Patti and Phil McLain, Socorro’s popular Skeeter Leard (acrylics and oils), wildlife photographer Jerry Goffe, and craft designer Jon Hagelund, whose walking sticks and other objects are derived from local plants.
