Socorro, NM - Oct 1: Socorro is the place to be for high-spirited fun and a stunning variety of live entertainment on the weekend of October 10 and 11. Listen to rock, country, folk, bluegrass, salsa, soul, swing or world music at Socorro’s Sixth Annual Socorro Fest.

Whether you prefer to sip fine wines or sample micro-brewed beers, you’ll be able to select from the offerings of a variety of New Mexican wineries and microbreweries, including Socorro’s own Socorro Springs Brewing Company, BEST of FEST Winner out of 53 brewing companies nationwide at the 2008 Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

The fun starts Friday night, Oct. 10, with ethnotechno roots music direct from Italy. Fiamma Fumana performs Northern Italian music with contemporary attitude and new beats, at New Mexico Tech’s Macey Center, in a high energy show sponsored by the New Mexico Tech Performing Arts Series (www.nmtpas.org (http://www.nmtpas.org/)). Following the performance, Sassfire will be playing at the Capitol Bar. Socorro Fest begins at noon on Saturday, Oct. 11, with a diverse line-up of music and dance performances on two outdoor stages on Socorro’s historic plaza, and runs late into the night.

Art & Food

While enjoying the music you can stroll through the plaza admiring tie-dye clothing, pottery, jewelry, tole painting, stained glass, boutique soaps and balms, rosaries and statues, toys and puppets, honey and everything lavender.

When you need a little refreshment, there will be posole and chile stew, frybread and Indian tacos, burritos and frito pies, brisket and brats, turkey legs and philly steak, burgers and roasted corn. Spirits tents featuring local wineries and micro-breweries will be located near both outdoor stages.

Harmonica Contest

A new feature is the first ever Harmonica Contest at 1:00pm on the patio of the Stage Door Grill (www.stagedoorgrill.net (http://www.stagedoorgrill.net/)), also located on the plaza. The Harmonica Contest is open to players of all ages, with any brand or type of harmonica. The entry fee for the adult division is $20, with a first place prize of $150. The entry fee is $5 for youth with first place winning $35. The top three finalists will also be invited to perform on the Plaza Stage at 6:00pm for a Crowd Pleaser Contest, with additional prize money at stake. To register for the Harmonica Contest, go to www.socorrofest.com (http://www.socorrofest.com/) or call the Socorro Heritage and Visitor Center at 575-835-8927.

Music

The sheer variety of talent featured on each stage at this year’s Socorro Fest promises something for everyone. During the day, highlights of the Plaza Stage include Et Alia Belly Dance Troupe, a variety of folk, bluegrass and Spanish music, plus the Bernie Romero Band performing traditional Mexican folk (Bernie is recognized as a “folkloric treasure of the southwest,”) the red-hot local variety band Remedy, and the roadhouse rock and blues band Huckaby Junction, featuring gold-record holders Terry Kincaid and Mariam Funke (www.huckabyjunction.com (http://www.huckabyjunction.com/)). Ivon Ulibarri with Café Mocha, one of Albuquerque’s hottest salsa bands, (www.cafemochasalsaband (http://www.cafemochasalsaband/). com) plays in the evening, and Albuquerque’s alternative soul, new school funk, R&B and pop sensation The James Douglas Show (www.thejamesdouglasshow.com (http://www.thejamesdouglasshow.com/)) will close out the night.

The City Hall Stage will showcase local talents performing traditional Spanish, folk, country, Western swing, blues, classic and alternative rock. Closing the evening will be the high energy funk, jazz and Latin rock band Gunzawless, a Phoenix-based group anchored by three brothers who grew up in Socorro playing music. (www. gunzawless.com).

When the festivities are over on the plaza on Saturday night, you can go to the Capitol Bar where Huckaby Junction will take the stage from 10pm to 1am.

This year’s Socorro Fest has a lot of firsts,” said Ronna Kalish, director of the New Mexico Tech Performing Arts Series. “It’s our first time bringing regional and in-state talent, and our first ever harmonica contest, we’re really excited about that. Socorro has amazing musicians and visual artists, a world-class performing arts series, great attractions in the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, the Very Large Array, and much more. We invite our neighbors to make their first visit to Socorro Fest!”

“The Socorro Fest Getaway packages are another first,” Deborah Dean, City of Socorro Tourism Director said, “and we’re happy about being able to offer the free shuttle rides to and from the Belen Railrunner station for our out-oftown visitors.” Socorro Fest is sponsored by the City of Socorro with the help of a host of volunteers. Other events taking place in the area during this fun-filled and festive weekend include the Alamo Indian Days at the Alamo Reservation with a big parade on Saturday morning, and the Sevilleta Wildlife Refuge’s Annual Open House, which will include guided hikes, tours, and field trips, exhibitions and workshops on Oct. 11 and 12.
