Silver City, NM – Oct 1: Join in four days of festive activities at the 12th annual Silver City “Weekend at the Galleries” – Columbus Day weekend, October 10 to 13. Participate in gallery art walks, a wine tasting gala, the “phantom studio” special event and art auction, theater presentations and a Film Festival. The weekend festivities are presented by the Mimbres Region Arts Council and sponsored by 1st New Mexico Bank of Silver City. Media sponsor Q92 FM.

More than 200 artists will have their work presented in over two dozen galleries in historic downtown Silver City during this annual Columbus Day weekend art extravaganza. Many new works will be on display, as well as outdoor sculptural pieces at several sites throughout the arts district. Gallery openings take place 10am to 7pm on Saturday, Oct. 11, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday Oct. 12 and from 10am to 2pm Monday Oct. 13.

Kick off the weekend Friday night, Oct 10 with the Wine Tasting Opening Reception – a benefit for the Mimbres Region Arts Council -- 5-7pm at the Gallery 400. Enjoy sampling different wines from New Mexico Wineries in the beautiful outdoor courtyard of the gallery, while admiring the paintings on exhibit. The $15 ticket entitles the bearer to a commemorative wine glass and tastes of several varieties of wine. Additional wine can be purchased at $5 a glass.

On Saturday Oct. 11, experience the “Phantom Studio” event. Here’s how it works: on Saturday, a studio materializes at Ikosaeder, located at 315 N Texas Street, and 13 artists appear out of nowhere – each creating a piece of art in just 8 hours. The public is encouraged to watch. The artwork created will be auctioned at Gallery 400. Each wonderful piece will disappear into the hands of a happy bidder – but don’t expect the works to be framed, or even dry! A $15 ticket admits you to the auction. Preview the artwork at 7:30pm; bidding starts at 8:00pm.

The Theater Group New Mexico & Virus Theater present Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” at the Gila Theater in the downtown historic district. Six shows: October 10 at 9:30 pm; October 11 at 2 pm, 5 pm, 9:30 pm; and, October 12 at 2 pm & 5 pm. Visit www.virustheater (http://www.virustheater/).com for information.
