Las Cruces, NM (09/17/08) – <img src="http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/images/renfair1.jpg" border=1 align=right alt="Visit Dona Ana Arts Faire in Las Cruces">Huzzah and good tidings, Lords, Ladies and Gentles all! ‘Tis that time of the year again; when the young and young-at-heart may return to a festive, long ago era and revel in the joy and spectacle of The 37th Annual Renaissance ArtsFaire. Sponsored by the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC), The Renaissance ArtsFaire transforms Young Park, here, into the magical realm of Doña Ana, where a medieval sensibility reigns and a fantastical atmosphere prevails throughout the entire weekend. Featuring the largest juried art show in Southern New Mexico and more delights than you can shake a wand at, The 37th Annual Renaissance ArtsFaire opens doorways to the imagination, Nov.1 & 2.
As in past years, more than 160 artists and artisans from throughout the region and across the country will be on hand to sell original, handcrafted items, including stained glass, pottery and ceramics, photographs, leather goods, jewelry, paintings and drawings, sculpture, toys, musical instruments, textiles and wood.
In addition to the artists’ booths, the two-day festival features ongoing entertainment at three differ- ent entertainment areas, delectable food booths, royal processions, The Merry Court of Sherwood Oak and The Children’s Realm, a large designated area chock full of family activities and entertainment.
Magellan, the Faire’s specially created dragon, spends the weekend overseeing the activities while floating lazily on Young Park Lake. Attendees daring enough can take a canoe ride to get “up close and personal” with the Faire’s most famous icon.
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) will have a large encampment featuring horse games, battles, and demonstrations.
In addition, Young Park will be alive with music throughout the weekend, with a wide range of musicians entertaining, including: Yolanda Martinez, performing traditional Native American music, and Jake Jacobs of Skyelarke providing the sweet sounds of the hammered dulcimer.
Variety and entertainment are hallmarks of this legendary festival; to that end, Clan Tynker, a medieval juggling and acrobatics team, will delight the crowds again this year with their Commedia dell’Arte style antics including fire-breathing and sword swallowing. The Merry Court of Sherwood Oak offers a look into royal life of the period with the Queen’s “Bawdy Balladeers,” a medieval “fashion show,” and an opportunity to learn court dancing.
The Faire will be open 10am – 5pm on Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday. Gate admission is $5.00 for adults, while children 12 and under are free. Proceeds from the Faire are designated for art programs and other cultural activities in the community - all sponsored by the Doña Ana Arts Council. For health and safety reasons, faire-goers are advised that no pets, except service animals, will be admitted to the Faire.
Young Park is located one block south of the intersection of Lohman and Walnut Avenues and is easily accessible from both I-25 (Lohman exit) and I-10 (Amador exit). To avoid parking congestion, attendees are encouraged to ride the FREE shuttle from the Mesilla Valley Mall, to and from the park. Watch for the signs and the big yellow school busses. The shuttle will run every 10 - 15 minutes beginning at 10am each day.
