The popular public art display has been featured for many years in the yard of a private residence on School of Mines Rd. The whimsical work, which consists of 24 giant-sized Crayola Crayons up to 9 feet tall is the artistic brainchild of Rodaki, otherwise known as Rebecca Titus Taylor who once lived at the residence where the Crayons are still displayed almost every year. The crayons –are proudly displayed in a few highly privileged private homes scattered around Socorro for 11 months each year. But are collected again for each fall to celebrate the “Crayon Festival”.
Alert visitors and those with Crayola fetishes should look for and enjoy the giant crayons as you travel from Socoro <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/ /><st1:PlaceType w:st=Plaza</st1:PlaceType> to the NM Tech campus on <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">School of Mines Road</st1:address></st1:Street>. They usually appear a few days before the Crane Festival weekend and disappear again soon after the last bird watcher leaves the area.
