The public will be able to view the burros at 401 12th Street beginning at 5:00pm and at 6:00 enjoy the traditional burrito dinner. The official auction begins at 7:00pm with Tim Keithley of MTD radio as auctioneer. Earlier in the afternoon a live team of burros will be on the street to add to the fun.

Once again, local artists and enthusiastic volunteers of the creative persuasion have taken 34 life-sized cast-aluminum burros and painted, embellished, hammered on, welded to, carved in, whatever a creative mind can conjure up will be seen on these burros. Some have wings... some wear space suits... some are on skate bords, some are painted pink... while others sport zebra stripes or are covered in adobe, pottery mosaics or mirror tiles. All are unique and lovely and the best part is no two burros are ever alike. The possibilities are absolutely endless.

The event is a fundraiser to benefit local animal shelters and animal rescues. All funds raised beyond the basic cost of acquiring the burros and related materials are donated to animal shelters and animal care causes throughout the region.

Burro Serenade is the creative brainchild of Gallery 408 owners Joan and Warren Malkerson. The Malkersons’ love of art and animals plus their desire to help promote Carrizozo, New Mexico as an art community has blossomed into one of the Gallery’s premier events and is fast becoming one of the best knwon and most popular public art projects in Southern New Mexico.

"We've had inquiries and interest from artists throughout Southern New Mexico," he said. "Next year we intend to open the project to participation by artists from other parts of the state. "

Pre-sale of the 2008 burros begins on October 6, 2008 at Gallery 408.

Interested readers, artists and art lovers can visit their site at www.gallery408.com (http://www.gallery408.com/), to see the burros as they return from each artist's studio. Or better yet, drive out and visit Gallery 408 at 408 12th Street Carrizozo, NM to see which burros have arrived recently. You'll be glad you did. Burro Serenade is a whimsical project with a truly worthwhile purpose!
