Annual Home Tour provides scholarship funds, promotes young artist
Socorro – Art by Angelique Gutierrez, a 16-year-old junior at Socorro High School, is featured on tickets and posters for this year’s “Visitas de Navidad” – the annual AAUW holiday tour of homes scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14.
The colors in Ms. Gutierrez’s original artwork were digitally altered to produce a palette of blues and lavenders, giving the scene a midnight-in-the-Southwest kind of feel, according to Kay Krehbiel, home tour coordinator.
Krehbiel recently presented Ms. Gutierrez with a check for $50 for having her artwork chosen among this year’s art entries. Her teacher is Laurie Heintz. The young artist plans to spend her winnings on Christmas gifts.
Tickets for the home tour are $8 and can be purchased at Brownbilt, Socorro Office Supply, from any AAUW member and at the door.
Proceeds benefit the AAUW scholarship fund for women at SHS and New Mexico Tech.
The four homes chosen for this year’s AAUW Visitas de Navidad home tour reflect comfortable living, whether among furniture and artifacts hundreds of years old, roomy child-friendly spaces, a gourmet-styled kitchen, or in historic surroundings.
Visitors may tour the homes in any particular order from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
The home tour is the organization’s primary means to raise funds for scholarships for women at Socorro High School and New Mexico Tech.
In alphabetical order, this year’s featured homes are:
Darla and Craig Bejnar, Hope Farms Road (look for signs);
Virginia Chang and Michael Heagy, 514 School of Mines Road;
Jean Kahler, 604 Leroy Place (corner of Fitch and Leroy); and
