Stage Door in Socorro has tasty recipe
for good food and fun atmosphere

By Gwen Roath

Socorro – The Juan Jose Baca House has seen various incarnations over its 150-year existence – from home and merchantile with echos of one of Socorro’s most colorful figures Elfego Baca, to a small business center.

It’s most recent life may be its finest – and one which is delighting Socorroans and visitors alike. The Stage Door Grill opened just over a year ago and has quickly become the hot spot for people seeking good food and a fun atmosphere. Let’s face it, where else in a good day’s ride can you find Cajun cooking alongside traditional Mexican fare and great steaks and seafood?

Add to that a good dollup of home-grown and imported music and you get the flavor of the joint.

Hosts Terry and Denise Eiler seem to always be around, greeting customers, or stepping up on stage to play with their band Huckaby Junction or any number of other musical groups and formations which perform most weekend evenings.

From the onset, the Stage Door Grill was a popular spot featuring such authentic Canjun dishes and jabalaya, lobster bisque and gumbo. Their sweet potato fries are mighty fine and you’ll be hard pressed to find a steak or pork chop that is tastier or more tender than those served up at the Grill. Their new menu is a handsome book-like affair with sturdy pages and lots of selections. But you’ll find the prices are down-right old fashioned considering the size of the portions and quality of ingredients.

The warehouse-sized room with its thick windowless adobe walls and long, narrow dimensions are mellowed with the delightful artwork by local artist Natasha Isenhour. Among the paintings at the Grill is an original, commissioned work also the cover for Huckaby Junction’s latest CD. Isenhour’s studio, The Curious Crow, sits at the east end of the Baca building.

Whether you’re looking for an elegant night out, a tasty hamburger lunch or a pint of Shiner Bohenian Black Lager, you’ll find the friendly, efficient service and local ambiance will make you feel right at home at the Stage Door. (Reservations 575.835.2403 are advised for weekend dinners and special events.)
