The Hey, Mozart! New Mexico child composer project, starting its fourth year seeks original melodies composed by New Mexico children 12 and under. The statewide program had a hugely successful and exciting year in 2008 with over 250 entries, more than twice the number of the previous year.
Children born on or after March 31, 1996 may submit their original melody for 2009 in music notation or in a recording, singing or playing their piece. Hey, Mozart! recognizes and encourages the creative impulses of children making music. The focus is on the creativity of the child composer, not his or her technical musical skills. For an application form and parental release and waiver and to listen to previous years entries, go to www.heymozartnm.org. Melodies submitted must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2009.
Katie Harlow, the project’s music director, is an active composer and arranger, and a member of the Performing Arts Faculty at the Albuquerque Academy. Alejandro Rutty, a conductor and faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the originator of Hey, Mozart!, continues as the project’s artistic director.
In the spring of 2009 Harlow, Rutty, and a team of musicians will select 16 melodies from those submitted. Then student and professional orchestrators will arrange them for orchestra. During the summer a local orchestra will record the arranged versions to CD. In the fall of 2009 the National Hispanic Cultural Center will host a free concert at which each young composer will play her/his melody and then the orchestral version will be performed by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. The Hey, Mozart! New Mexico2009 CD will be released at the concert.
Hey, Mozart! New Mexico is a New Mexico tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation. The project is a partnership among Hey, Mozart! New Mexico, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra and is supported in part by grants from the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, The ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund, and donations from the public.
