Art is alive and well in Socorro
Public art on plaza & expanding gallery in historic Baca house

Socorro – The winds of change are blowing through Socorro and in their wake, new public art and expanded art possibilities are springing up in downtown historic district.

Seating, walkways and interpretive signs have been added around the Wheel of Time sculpture. Each of eight monuments to Socorro history will consist of a main plaque depicting some aspect of Socorro history, with 24 children’s tiles decorating the monument base.

The tiles were made by Socorro children during the annual Community Arts Party. Having them installed in a public art project has been a dream of Liz Alvarez, a local artist currently teaching art at Cottonwood Charter School.

More children’s tiles decorate two benches, one at Elfego Baca, and one at the intersection of School of Mines Road and Mount Carmel,. New lighting from the Plaza to San Miguel Mission and along School of Mines Road to the campus of New Mexico Tech will complete the project,î according to the city.

Meanwhile, just north of the park in the Juan Jose Baca Building, the gallery and art studios is doubling in size. The Fulligim-Isenhour- Leard Gallery once again looks like a gallery while the Curious Crow Studios of Margi Lucena and Natasha Isenhour have moved west. The entire art venue is now accessible through the breezeway. Now it’s easier than ever to stop in and see the artists working and enjoy the great food, ambience and music at the Stage Door Grill just next door. Web users can also visit Curious Crow Studio here (http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/viewarticle.php?op=visit&articleid=698).
