From the Wildlife Art Show under the Big Tent at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge to the gracious adobe hacienda that houses Scarabeo Studio in western Magdalena, art will be as beautiful and plentiful as the snow geese and sandhill cranes along El Rio Grande in the fall.
It’s time for Socorro’s welcome to the migrating birds and the migrating folks who follow them in the spectacular Bosque del Apache Refuge. The 18th annual Festival of the Cranes begins on Tuesday, Nov. 18 with special tours and events through the week.
The celebration accelerates toward the end of the week with art exhibits, art shows and receptions, crafts fairs, benefit performances and special dinners laid out like a fine feast for the harvest time.
The Festival of Cranes itself is centered at the Refuge, 7 miles south of San Antonio (Exit 139) and in Socorro, particularly at NM Tech’s Macey Center. The Friends of the Bosque website www.friendsofthebosque.org has all the details.
While at the refuge be sure to visit the Wildlife Art Show in the Big Tent near the Visitor Center. The juried art show draws fine artists from the region, all with wildlife as their theme in their chosen median. Wildlife Art Show runs from 9:30 to 5:30 on Friday; 8:30 – 5:30 on Saturday and 8:30 –3 pm on Sunday.
There’ll be special activities, too in San Antonio, which now boasts three restaurants plus an art gallery and coffee/dessert shop called Pentimento.
Special events begin on Wednesday in Socorro with the Socorro Community Theatre production of “Lend Me A Tenor,” in a dinner theatre setting at the historic Garcia Opera House on Wednesday, Nov. 16. See www.friendsofthebosque.org for details.
Then from Friday through Sunday, the Festival of the Cranes Arts & Crafts Fair will fill Garcia Opera House with dozens of artists both local and regional offering a variety of jewelry, fine arts, crafts, gifts and accessories.
Two receptions are slated at NM Tech’s Macey Center: A reception for the Festival’s Photography Contest begins at 5 pm on Friday, Nov. 18; and a reception of the Socorro Arts Show, hanging at the Macey Gallery until December, begins at 5:30 on Saturday, Nov. 19 followed by a concert sponsored by NM Tech’s President Dan Lopez; the Festival of Latin String Quartets begins at 7:30 pm.
Be sure to stop and enjoy the Festival of the Crayons on School of Mines. This free exhibit is the gift of Rebecca Titus-Taylor to public art in Socorro.
Two art shows will feature the work of Magdalena artists and crafters at venues in Magdalena on Saturday and Sunday. The High Flying Art Festival at the Magdalena Schools Fine Arts Center will feature special events each day from 9 am to 5 pm; 854-3451 for more information. And the 8th annual Magdalena Arts Council’s Holiday Arts Festival from 9-5 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday will be centered at the new Rt. 60 Trading Post, along with other venues. www.magdalena-nm.com or 505-854-3340.
Getting dizzy? Don’t we’re not thru yet: Travel south of Socorro and San Antonio and back into the mists of the past as the El Camino International Heritage Center celebrates its grand opening on Saturday, Nov. 19 with plenty of special events and activities. The new center is set among spectacular views of the historic El Camino, taking visitors back hundreds of years through its portrayals of the road’s history.
Whew! Had enough? We hope you enjoy all the special events – or just one or two. Enjoy spectacular views that you can never (we think) get enough of– and a chance to shop for holiday gifts.
PS: Don’t forget to bring your camera.
