Alto, NM– July shines at Spencer Theater as 60 area children take the stage lights in Missoula Children’ Theatre’s original adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” at 7 p.m. Friday, July 10 ($15 adults, $7 for children). The young thespians, ages 6 to 17, star in the musical after a week of workshops at the theater that are sponsored in part by Ruidoso Lincoln Ford Mercury. Auditions are Monday, July 6 at 9 a.m. (Call for location).
Humor and great dance music liven up the remainder of July with:
Winning actor Hal Holbrook dazzles patrons next in Mark Twain, Tonight! at 8 p.m. Fri., July 17 ($89 & $86). Holbrook’s one-man, multi-awarding-winning tour-de-force is never twice the same as he has com¬piled over 14 hours of Twain’s astute wit and politically irreverent writings from which to choose.
Then, a jubilant night of dance and music with the Sisters Morales and their sizzling band at 8 p.m. Sat., July 25 ($39 & $36). This hot Austin band blends alt-country, R&B and Mexican folk ballads with flare. Free Latin American dance lessons at 4 p.m. (for concert ticket holders)plus a 6 p.m. all-you-can-eat buffet of Mexican cuisine. (Buffet is $20 per patron).
August kicks-off with plenty of romance as the legendary Beach Party actor-singer Frankie Avalon rocks with his band in at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sat., Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. & 8 p.m. ($69- $79), serenading us with his early rock hits like Venus, Dede Dinah, Cupid and Teardrops.
The very best young pianist in the world takes the Spencer spotlights at 8 p.m. Sat., Aug. 8 when the new 2009 Van Cliburn Gold Medalist performs a program of classical beauty ($39 adults, $25 under 18). The event is presented by the Chamber Music Festival in Ruidoso.
Dozens of fiddlers, singers and dancers celebrate the King of Texas Swing, the legendary musician Bob Wills, in the original musical play A Ride With Bob starring Asleep at the Wheel at 8 p.m. Thurs., Fri. & Sat. - Aug. 13, 14 & 15 ($59 & $56), The high-energy performance is sponsored by The Hubbard Foundation and Chevron Corporation.
Hundreds of fresh New England lobsters will be flown in for the Spencer Lobster Fest Fund Raiser, an all-you-can-eat affair, at 6 p.m. Sat., Aug. 22 ($100). Snazzy jazz bands will abound at this scrumptious night on the Spencer grounds.
Next up: The world famous folk revival groups The Limeliters (This Land is Your Land, A Hundred Men, Whiskey In The Jar) and The Highwaymen (Big Rock Candy Moun¬tain, Gypsy Rover, Michael Row The Boat Ashore) charge the night with gorgeous harmonies, folklore, humor & history at 8 p.m. Tues., Aug.25, ($59 & $56).
And closing out the season is the Elvis Presley Story with Ronnie McDowell at 8 p.m. Sat., Aug.29 ($79 & $76). The critically acclaimed tribute also features McDowell’s dynamic rock band plus Presley’s original backup gospel singers, The Stamps Quartet.
