Datil – Once a year, the Datil Community Center becomes the place for friends from far and wide to meet, greet and eat. This year the annual Extension Club Craft Fair will be Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 am to 4 pm. Ladies of the Club decorate the Community Center with Christmas wreaths and ornaments, and vendors’ booths fill every available space.
Crafters come from all over the large county to offer a wide variety of products. Additional vendors come from as far away as Clovis, Silver City, and Socorro. The Craft Fair, now more than 20 years old, has become a tradition for many of the vendors, and for customers as well.
Patrons of the Fair know they will find quality products for themselves and for Christmas gift-giving. Quilts, hand-made toys, wreaths and note cards; jams and jellies, pottery, batik and baked goods; clothing, woven and crocheted articles, and needlework: all these and more are available. Artist Grem Lee, well known illustrator for New Mexico Magazine, often has a booth.
There’s a raffle table, too, and prizes are awarded each hour to a lucky winner. Nor are the children forgotten: Santa is there with his bag full of goodies and no child goes away empty-handed.
The purpose of all this activity is to raise money for a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior of Quemado High School. Last year’s Fair was so successful that the Extension Club was able to award two $500 scholarships for deserving students.
To get to the Craft Fair from the north or the south, take I-10 to Socorro, then head west on Highway 60. At the intersection of Highway 60 and Highway 12, turn south on 12 and proceed _ mile to the sign on the left, indicating a left turn to the Craft Fair. From Reserve, take Highway12 north to the Craft Fair sign opposite the Elementary School, and turn right.
