Old Timers is a tradition in Magdalena lasting three days on the second weekend of July. There is a rodeo for children, another for cowboys 50 years of age and older, a street dance, theater, arts and crafts, barbecue, pancake breakfast, New Mexican food, Navajo fry bread and other dishes, parade and much more.
Jo was raised in the Magdalena ranching community. Dutch, her father, worked as a ranch hand. He started out as a cook on a chuck wagon. Alice, Jo's mother, was one of nine girls that were real cowgirls. They lived on the ranch at Field, New Mexico, north of Magdalena and did all the riding, roping, bronc riding, branding, fence building and whatever needed to be done. Jo's parents took part and helped organize the Old Timers Reunions.
The Castillos look forward to the summer in New Mexico away from of the heat of Texas. Jo paints plein air (outside in a couple of hours before the light changes) in pastel, acrylics or oil and sketches in pen and ink. The artist says, "Pastels are my favorite medium because they are tactile, immediate and long lasting. This summer Jo and Gene, her husband, will be in Angel Fire and Albuquerque.
