Confessions of an Old Crone

I’m coming out of the closet.

It seems to be the thing to do these days, tho, Laud Knows my Mama didn’t teach me to do things just because “everyone’s doing it.”!

I’m no WNBA star or anything.

No, I’m a closet Vigilante junkie. The Vigilante Band – in case you’ve never been to a New Mexico Tech 49ers Reunion in October in Socorro – is The band associated with Tech’s 49ers. One of the few bluegrass bands to come out of the middle Rio Grande, the band celebrated its 30th reunion this year starting with the opening act at the 900-seating capacity Macey Center on the Tech campus.

The Vigilantes are, to some of us locals otherwise unassociated with the college who’ve been around to celebrate as many 49ers, what that annual celebration is all about. 49ers equals Vigilantes, to heck with what the youngsters are doing.

I await the fall with eager anticipation due only to the marked dates on the calendar; and long after the band has quit playing, their songs reverberate in my mind. The cds help, of course; I’ve played nothing else for a week now and bits and pieces pop up in my consciousness at strange and strangely appropriate times and places.

I’m a junkie, like I said, and mostly I say I’m “closet” ‘cause the only live music I got to hear this year was that concert.

No Capital Bar for me – a first in my herstory in this town. Oh, well. I may be aging but I’m still optimistic that next year my health and wealth will allow more carousing at the watering hole and maybe even some outright dancing like the old days.

As it was, the concert was great – of course! Some one less familiar with them remarked how tight they played together. Well, of course. How often do you have to play the same songs to just fit back into a musical groove with hardly any effort?

A few new members; a few new songs – gasp! (just kidding), just an appetizer, really but they did play some of the favorites including Short Song.

I am now the proud owner of two of the bands three cds. And I’m looking forward to seeing a video of them, it is after all, about time, eh? Meanwhile, you can cruise the band’s wbesite, www.thevigilanteband.com which is where I’m going right now to buy that one cd I don’t have yet.
