SOCORRO – “Bosque del Apache—It’s More Than You Imagined!” That’s the challenge offered by an exhibition of photos, wood carvings and decoys which continues through January, 2006, at New Mexico Tech’s Joseph R. Skeen Library.
Created by the Friends of the Bosque del Apache at the invitation of library director Dr. Dal Symes, the exhibit documents Bosque’s claim as a ‘refuge for all seasons’ and an attraction for people with many different interests.
Twenty-five 30” x 40” panels feature photography by published wildlife photographers Jerry Goffe, Gary Froehlich and Wally Newman, text by John Bertrand and the graphic design of Don Begley.
Displayed in glass cases accompanying the wall panels are decoys provided by Ducks Unlimited of 16 of the 25 duck species found on the refuge, and wood carvings of Bosque bird and amphibian species by award-winning Albuquerque carver Bruce Taylor and Magdalena artist Bill Strickler.
Featured in the 25 photographic panels are birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, dragonflies and damselflies, and butterflies which can be enjoyed at various seasons on the refuge. Selected species lists on each panel accompany the photographs.
Also illustrated are spring and autumn wildflower bonanzas, the Laura Jean Deal Desert Arboretum, hiking trails, remote wilderness areas, and wildlife habitats. Several panels illustrate Bosque- and Friends-sponsored programs such as the Festival of the Cranes, summer educational series and curriculum-based school activities.
The show concludes with an invitation to ‘Come See Bosque for Yourself—It’s More Than You Imagined!’
