Hondo Valley – For those who want to enjoy their holiday shopping experience far away from the maddening crowds at the big box stores and malls (and we figure that’s most of our readers), this year the weekend after Thanksgiving offers a unique shopping and viewing experience.
Artists in the beautiful Hondo Valley will open their doors for a Christmas Shopping Extravaganza offering truly unique gifts. Follow the green mile markers along Highway 70 from Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs east toward Roswell to find these hidden gems. Hours are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 &26 from 10 am to 4:30 pm.:
Ann Templeton (frontage road on the south side of highway 70 between mile markers 270-271). Ann is a renowned teacher and artist whose work was featured in the June/July, 2004 Steppin Out cover) will feature her color saturated oils and pastels.

Lyne La Porte and Lou Maestas studio (turn south near mile market 280 on county road, bear right at the marked intersection of E010, gate will be marked.) display original hand knits and jewelry with semi-precious stones and beads. Lou will show his paintings and sketches. Guest artist Georgia Stacy will exhibit her wood sculpture.

Hurd-La Rinconada Gallery and Guest Homes (MM 281, frontage road to St. Jude Church, left to La Mancha, right to gallery. The road is clearly marked.) Original works by Peter Hurd, Henriette Wyeth Hurd, Michael Hurd, Andrew Wyeth, and N.C. Wyeth. Signed reproductions are also available. Beautifully refurbished adobe casitas once ranch hands’ houses on Peter Hurd’s Sentinel Ranch.

San Patricio Retreat Center (across from the Hurd Gallery, off of La Mancha road.) The retreat center is located in the former “Fort Meigs” property and includes several guest rooms with private baths and facilities for small groups. The grounds are beautiful, and include a rose garden and large meadow on the river.

Benson Fine Art Gallery (Mile marker 281, frontage road to St. Jude church, left on White Cat road, which becomes John West Road. Marked with signs, 105 John West.) An array of works by period and contemporary Southwestern Artists. Judy Benson offers a selection of woven neckpieces and fiber sculptures. The three Benson galleries are located in an 1800’s adobe complex.

Hondo Iris Farm and Gallery (South side of Highway at mile marker 284.) Botanical garden, Iris farm, and a large galleryfeaturing folk art and textiles from around the world, Christmas ornaments, a jewelry factory store, , women’s clothing and purses, and ceramics. The featured artist Alice Warder Seely displays her jewelry, paintings and sculpture.

La Espuela Restaurant (turn on Highway 380, the restaurant is hidden next to “La Espuela Arena” on the left going toward Lincoln.) clean, well run restaurant is a favorite of locals; features a renowned green chile cheese burger, New Mexican Style dishes. The restaurant is Hondo’s secret “great place to eat” and is open for lunch and dinner.

Iris Farm Annex (mile marker 286, south side of highway) combines a gift shop with hand crafted objects from all over the world, women’s clothing, and a display of Alice’s Jewelry. Tour the factory facility and see how her pewter jewelry is made. The production center supplies more than 500 stores with Seely’s work and sells jewelry at “factory” prices. The store also features Alice’s new jackets and tapestries, designed by Alice and hand made in Kashmere.

Tangle Y Wood-N-Art (East side of Highway 70, MM 286.5) features a 4200 square foot wood shop and shopping area filled with unique furniture, accessories, gifts, wall pieces and custom home decor. Joe will also custom build or modify any pieces.
