During the Festival Of The Cranes celebration in the Bosque del Apache Refuge, visitors might want to get their binoculars ready in hot pursuit of some miniature cranes that have been sighted in Magdalena! These cranes are all heading to The High Flying Art Festival, November 19th and 20th in the Fine Arts Center of the Magdalena Municipal Schools located on the east edge of the Village of Magdalena. The hours of the event are 9am to 5pm both days.

This art festival is presented by The Creative Connection Of Magdalena in cooperation with the Magdalena Municipal Schools. "We want to thank the Magdalena Schools for welcoming us into their fine facility." says Cat Brysch, event coordinator. "We look forward to a joyful, busy and varied event which will embrace the entire community!"

Visitors to The High Flying Art Festival will find over 25 artisans showing art and fine craft with so much variety of goods that any shopper will be inspired to "think holidays". The pieces include unique gourd masks, fine hand tooled leather goods, paintings, hand turned wood pieces, spinning and weaving tools, handmade walking sticks and canes, clay works, woven garments and accessories, gemstone jewelry, hand carved folk art, fiber art, dichroic glass lampwork beads and much more.

"Joyous music will be offered by the area’s most talented bards," says Shirley Lamar. "We have a talented array of musicians here on Saturday including the Damas de Deters and the Steel Chicks are with us all day Sunday!" To add color to the event, there is the "not-just-for-kids face painting" 11-4 each day with Nita Lorande and Marilyn Lyons.

Also joining in the event is Lorna D. Saunders with a book signing of "The Elsewhere" who has ordered a second printing of that book just in time for the High Flying Art Festival. In addition, a reading from her new book of poetic vignettes is also planned. The actual schedule of these events will be announced at a later date. Spinning and weaving demonstrations will be taking place from 10-3 on Saturday.

"We have art for the eyes, art for the ears and art for the spirit," says Brysch. "The Creative Connection is proud of the quality of this festival and know that visitors will have a great time!" Visitors will also be well cared for in the food and refreshment department with a wide variety of treats and eats, for breakfast and for lunch, furnished by Freedom Vending.

The motto of The Creative Connection is "making the connection between art and the community!" and to that end, there will be a Community Area set up to welcome any school group or local charity group who want to have a fund raising venue. "We have worked hard to make sure that the community is involved," says Jim Hokett, "and they are really behind us!"

Another feature of this art festival is a very special presentation from Dolly Dawson who has created a hand-painted, hand-printed map of the New Mexico Territories depicting the area in the 1800’s. The map, measuring about 3 feet by 6 feet, took Dolly 7 years to complete and involved very extensive research. "The Connection has invited Dolly to appear and show her map," says Leon Rodgers, "and we are so proud to have her here!" Dolly’s map will be set up for public viewing in the art vendors area as a sponsored guest of Hokett Would Work.

The Creative Connection thanks all their sponsors who are Magdalena Municipal Schools, Alamo Plumbing & Heating Supply, The Western Motel & RV Park, Ponderosa Café, High Country Lodge, Magdalena Café, Big Bear Café, Trails End Market, Chevron-DDN Petrol Services, Eagle’s Nest RV & Motel, NDN Mercantile, The MarketPlace, Rancho Magdalena, Evett’s Cafe and Hokett Would Work.

The High Flying Art Festival is being presented exclusively by The Creative Connection Of Magdalena. For further information call Cat Brysch, event coordinator, at (505) 854-3451.
