Socorro, NM - Nov 26: The morning air was crisp and cold as 30 - 40 hot air balloonists and their Socorro area fans gathered in sub-freezing temperatures to welcome the dawn and the start of the 2005 Socorro Balloon Rally. Dozens of launch crews and chase vehicles had already filled Tripp Field as dawn broke and the sun peeked over the eastern mountains. By 7:00 a.m. the first balloon was already flying high and headed north toward Escondida. By 7:30 pre-launch rituals and festivities were going strong and there were already more than 2 dozen colorful balloons in the air. Socorro's own local balloon the Ristra was missing this year because it has taken a trip down to Mexico for a balloon rally in Leon near Guadalajara.
