Socorro – The 3rd annual Socorro Arts Show at Macey Center is an exhibit that makes one proud to be a Socorroan, answering a question sometimes heard – in other areas of the state: “Is there art in Socorro?”
Indeed, there is and good artists, too, as the show confirms. A big kudos to this year’s organizer Georgia Raymond who produced a tastefully exhibited show of works of some 23 local artists.
Of course to get the full effect, one needs to view the show in person. The show continues through Dec. 18 during regular business hours and any evening events.
Debi Chavez’s recycled or found art creations are really delightful. Already a winner at the State Fair (she only began a couple years ago), her “Mama’s Kitchen” and “Rose’s Room” contain numerous small details that delight the viewer.
Cle’mente’s “Primitive Indian – Leather and Cat Brysch’s “Face of the Earth” are two of the striking “wall sculpture” pieces which are particularly memorable.
Lucy Chavez continues to make expand on her tin art while another glass artist, Dona Nowicki, also is expanding out into new fields. We enjoyed seeing new works by Pat Basham and Berenyce Baudoin and JW Fullerton, along with Peter Rice and relative newcomer Serife Inal.
Jennie LaBlanc Theodora entered two striking pictures; and particularly enjoyed Bev Hansen’s “Five O’clock Shadow.” We were surprised there weren’t more photographers but enjoyed Kim Zuidema’s Festival of the Cranes.
Other exhibitors were Alfred Blaszczak, Leon A. Miler, Karyn DeBont, Georgia Raymond, Jan Thomas, Liz Alvarez, Margaret Vogel and Nicola Roath.
