December 2001/January 2002

Yvonne Magener shares the expanse of her life’s experiences through the uniquely beautiful artwork she creates.  Since childhood she has lived throughout the world soaking in the rich, diverse cultures along the way.  Her father a sculptor and her mother a painter, she was immersed in creativity from a very early age.

Yvonne’s artistic vision brings to life Ostrich, Emu and ceramic eggs, as well as tiles and stones with gold and silver leaf, resins and antique finishes.  The resulting work of art is as rich in spirit and form as the cultures embedded in her lifetime of experience.

Yvonne now calls Magdalena, New Mexico home along with her mother Ilse.  While each work on their own respective artistic visions, they also take the time to collaborate on a number of projects.  Both women are making their contribution the ever-diversifying artistic environment that is Central New Mexico.

WPA Art at New Mexico Tech

Perhaps all you know about Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal is the WPA 1936 stamped on sidewalks around town, or as in “London Frontier Theatre presents....at the WPA Gym in Magdalena.”

The public works projects of the ’30s put people constructing buildings and roads; it also put artists to work: building a legacy of  paintings and textiles, music and theatre, rich in the history of those times.

The art from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the New Deal was largely ignored and unnoticed for decades but more recently has begun to receive its deserved appreciation.

Thanks to the efforts of people like Kathryn A. Flynn, the legacy of the New Deal can be enjoyed by contemporary Americans.

New Mexico Tech will begin the new year with an exciting exhibit of 82 photographs of New Deal art from around New Mexico. The exhibit will hang at Macey Center through Feb. 21. In conjunction with the exhibit, the Tech Library will display New Deal art along with books published under the program and books published about the era.

An opening reception at Macey Center on Thursday, Jan. , from 6-8 pm, will feature Socorro’s Women of the West Club sponsored by Zimmerly Elementary School teachers Theresa Apodaca and Kathe West.

Two lectures also are scheduled to coincide with the exhibit:

“New Deal Art in New Mexico and at New Mexico Tech Library”  on Wednesday, Jan. 23  7:30 pm. The lecture and tour of library New Deal art is by Kathryn Flynn, Executive Director of National New Deal Preservation Association. This evening sponsored by the Socorro Branch of the American Association of University Women.

And, “New Mexico and the New Deal,” talk by Dr. Scott Zeman, New Mexico Tech Humanities Department, on Thursday, Feb. 7, at  7:30 pm. The talk is sponsored by Tech Library.

Tech Librarian Kay Krehbiel is largely responsible for bringing this great exhibit to Macey Center and organizing the events. She effort began, she said, when the AAUW decided to invite Ms. Flynn down for a talk for the group. From there, Krehbiel learned of the exhibit and organized its hanging at Macey Center with center director Gabriel Ornalias.
