President's
Residence, Datil, NM |
December 2004 - January 2005 PieTown - Kelly D. Gatlin's photographs show he has an eye for beauty in both the rugged wilderness areas of Catron County and the high-tech operations of the Very Large Array and Very Long Baseline Arrray Radio Telescope sites. His photograph which graces out cover this month is titled President's Residence and Cherry Tree in Snow. Kelly writes: "Agnes Morley Cleaveland, author of the western classic "No Life for a Lady," had this cabin constructed near Datil for her son, Norman, when he was president of the Pacific Tin & Mining company. On the front she hung a sign, "President's Residence." Kelly comes by his love of the High Country honestly: His grandparents were neighbors to the Morleys, and he himself has tramped along the Continental Divide and around the Saw Tooth Mountains first as a child and now as an adult. His "day job" is with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's radio telescopes but you also might catch him taking photographs of the yummy pies at Daily Pie or the Pie-O-Neer in Pie Town. Another favorite place of his is Swingle Canyon and the home of Anne Sullivan. Gatlin and Sullivan teamed up a few years ago to produce a piece on Volunteers for the Outdoors and their work at the VLA which appeared in the New Mexico Magazine. Since then, Kelly has been published in other issues of the New Mexico Magazine, in the Vacation Guide, wildlife magazines and the Santa Fean. You also can see his work at Peppers Gifts and Art Gallery and Evetts café in Magdalena, at the Daily Pie and the Pie-O-Neer Cafes in Pie Town. Or contact him at kdgatlin@laluzphoto.com |
