View Shuttle Landing At Alamogordo Museum
Landing May Be At White Sands

Museum visitors are invited to view the landing of Space Shuttle Discovery this Friday on the big screen TV at the New Mexico Museum of Space. “STS-116 is expected to land as early as 3:56 pm EST, or 1:56 MST, on Friday, Dec. 22. We will begin monitoring NASA’s TV feed on the fourth floor of the museum at 1:00 pm and we invite the public to join us, especially considering the possibility that Discovery might actually land at White Sands Space Harbor,” said Museum Interim Director James Crane. According to information on NASA’s website, the decision as to where the Shuttle will land may not be made until 90 minutes before the landing. A poor weather forecast for Kennedy Space Center and Edwards Air Force Base, the Shuttle’s primary and secondary landing locations, has caused NASA to seriously consider the New Mexico location. All three facilities are being prepared for the possibility. White Sands Space Harbor has only been used once by NASA for a shuttle landing in 1982 although the facility does serve as a shuttle astronaut training area.
