Jazz Concert – Chris Calloway, jazz vocalist, with Ricky Malichi Trio

When: January 28, 2006, 7PM - $8.00 adults, $5.00 students

Where: Historic Downtown Truth or Consequences Senior Rec Center, 301 Foch Street, between Sims & McAdoo Streets

Chris Calloway is a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she performed regularly to packed audiences at Espiritu club on Canyon Road. After a hiatus in performing, due to health reasons, Chris is thrilled to perform her first "comeback" show in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. After discovering T or C last year, she has been "taking the cure" in our hot waters, and, to express her appreciation, she is performing this fundraising performance for the Truth or Consequences 2006 Chamber of Commerce Fiesta.

Chris Calloway is the daughter of legendary Cotton Club bandleader, Cab Calloway, and an heir to American musical legacy, she began her career on the Ed Sullivan show over 30 years ago. The majority of the past 20 years Chris spent performing with her father and his Hi-De-Ho Orchestra. Together the father and daughter team toured the world, until her father passed away in 1995.

Chris' Broadway credits include the all black production of Hello, Dolly! starring Pearl Bailey, and the Pajama Game with Hal Linden and Barbara McNair. Her portrayal of the jazz legend, Billie Holiday, in the Lannie Robertson play Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill took her from Alabama to the Edinburgh Arts Festival. In 1999 Chris put together her father's last band for the JVC Jazz Festival in New York City. That success led directly to a 55-city tour called Cab Calloway's Legacy of Swing in the winter of 2001. Most recently, Chris created a one-woman show about her aunt, Blanche Calloway, called Clouds of Joy. The show opened to critical acclaim at the Sante Fe Stages International Theater Festival. Blanche Calloway was one of the only females to front a band in 1931, and was a strong influence in the early days of brother Cab's career. Blanche's career, Cab's career and now Chris' career represents over 75 years of popular entertainment from this great American musical family.

Drummer Ricky Malichi has been working with Chris Calloway since her arrival in New Mexico. He resides in El Paso, where he plays and teaches percussion. Ricky is bringing a pianist and bassist (TBA) from Texas, the band is very excited about performing their first show in T or C. The concert is produced by the Truth or Consequences / Sierra County Chamber of Commerce, and is funded in part by local private and corporate sponsors, the Sierra County Arts Council, and by Lodger’s Tax. Sophia & Nicholas Peron of “jazzinn.com” are promoting the show.
