INSIGHTS AND IMAGES OF NEW MEXICO, a photography workshop that has been held for the past two years in and around Truth or Consequences, is scheduled once again for early February of 2006.

The week-long seminar will culminate with an exhibit of photographs taken during the week. An opening reception will be held at When, one of downtown T or C’s newest art galleries, on February 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The public is invited to attend.

The gallery exhibit is a new component of the workshop, and will offer valuable experience to participants who may have never worked with a gallery before, or offered their artwork for sale in a public venue.

The workshop is led by photographer Steven Northup of Santa Fe, and by Warren Capps, the founder of Illuminations Photography in Alexandria, VA. Northup and Capps have collaborated over the past ten years on photo and travel workshops in Guatemala, Scotland, and Santa Fe. According to Northup “This workshop is an opportunity to use the history and beauty of southern New Mexico to enhance the photographic skills of our attendees.”

Northup’s long career as a photographer has included stints with The Santa Fe New Mexican, TIME Magazine, and United Press International. He began conducting photo travel workshops more than a decade ago. One of his early students was Warren Capps, who has been practicing photography for over 30 years.

According to the “Illuminations” website (www.illuminationsphoto.com), the workshop’s focus is on three areas: photography, history and spirituality. In addition to photographing Truth or Consequences’ Historic Bath House District, Northup and Capps will take their students to the Bosque del Apache, to three southern New Mexico ghost towns, and to visit the studio of 1880s photographer Charles Smith in Socorro.

Attendees registered for the workshop hail from Arizona, California, Arkansas and Virginia.

The INSIGHTS AND IMAGES exhibit at When will run through March 5.

http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif I am not sure that the landscape photo (of White Sands, I presume) attached to this post was taken by Stephen Northup or others associated with "Insights and Images," but I am most impressed with it -- especially the dark bush against the undulating white background http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif -- because it reminds me of the landscape paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe.
I am not among the cognosenti in such matters of art, but I am really curious to know if the photographer intended to emulate or portray the kind of "erotic tension" O'Keefe was noted for, or if he or she at least recognized the similarities?
http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif Or am I way off base? Perhaps it is a mere file photo from someone's collection. If so it should be elevated to a higher purpose.
