As if a couple of hundred film showings weren't enough to keep them busy, the IMAX facility will also be hosting an evening reception and film premier as part of Alamogordo's Western Mardi Gras event on February 20th. This event includes two guest speakers and the world premier of the award-winning film "Ride Around the World" (an international history of the cowboy) as part of the 2007 White Sands Film Festival.

On Friday, February 23, at 10:00 a.m. IMAX will also be hosting the world premier of "The Highest Step in the World" which tells the story of the trials and tribulations of Americas first Astronauts. This film won the two most prestigious awards in the 2007 White Sands Film Festival, the "Best of Festival" Award and the "Judges’ Choice" Award for Best Documentary.

Now here are the details on the special February 20th Mardi Gras events...

On Tuesday evening February 20, Southwest historian, author and radio talk show host Leon Metz will be one of two speakers at Western Mardi Gras. The event, which will be held at the Clyde W. Tombaugh IMAX Theater, is for the opening of the new IMAX film “Ride Around The World” in conjunction with the White Sands Film Festival.

Metz is a well known southwest historian in the region and a popular speaker for groups and conventions. He is the author of 17 non-fiction books and has a weekly column in the El Paso Times. He is the host of the popular “Leon Metz Show”, a two hour weekly radio talk show relating to southwest history. His favorite topics are historic El Paso, John Wesley Hardin, Billy the Kid and shady ladies.

A gala event is planned for the evening, including a Western Mardi Gras reception complete with Mardi Gras food and live entertainment. “Since February 20th is Fat Tuesday, we couldn’t let the opportunity to celebrate it in western style pass us by,” said New Mexico Museum of Space History Marketing Director Cathy Harper. “Our theater lobby will be decorated in old west style and all our staff will be in western costume. Southwest historian Leon Metz and western author Slim Randle will both be on hand to regale us with authentic tales about cowboys and horses and the western way of life.”

The event is sponsored by the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation, in conjunction with area businesses such as Pat Papson Insurance, White Sands Mall, Comfort Inn, Vision Ford and Runnels Broadcasting. There will be two showings of Ride Around the World, along with the premier of the short film The Adventures of Broke Truck Mountain. Filmed in Otero County, The Adventures of Broke Truck Mountain was produced by Erik Ness originally as a training film on how to think outside the box for the New Mexico Farm Bureau. But in this case, as Erik Ness so aptly put it, “some clever ranchers pushed the box off a mountain!” The film stars rancher Bernard Cleve from Elk, New Mexico, and received honorable mention in the American Farm Bureau’s national media awards in 2006.

Tickets for Western Mardi Gras and the film premiers are $25 per person or $40 per couple. The first 100 ticket holders will attend the film and speaker at 6:30 pm, the second 100 ticket holders will attend the film at speaker at approximately 7:50 pm. Western or Mardi Gras costumes are encouraged. To purchase tickets, visit the New Mexico Museum of Space History Gift Shop or call them at 505-437-0318 to purchase with a credit card.

They're looking forward to welcoming you to the Tombaugh IMAX Theater in Alamogordo during February!
