El Camino International Heritage Center will host a Chautauqua Program in conjunction with the Civil War Re-enactment events in Socorro. “Buffalo Soldiers; Military Heroes of the Southwest" features Fred Hampton as Lt. Mathias Day in the program which runs from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, Feb. 25
The program is one of a series of special events that have been lined up as part of the New Mexico State Monuments 75th anniversary celebration in 2006. The anniversary officially kicks off March 11 at Coronado State Monument near Bernalillo. Separate stories on this website detail the event that will take place there and at other state monuments of which the Heritage Center is one.
Hampton, as Lt. Mathias Day, and one or more of the troopers of the Buffalo Soldiers Society of New Mexico, along with over 50 period artifacts used by the Buffalo Soldiers, will bring the history of the Black cavalry to life. From Medal of Honor recipients to the common trooper, from Indian battles to battles with lawbreakers, learn how a small number of Black troopers made a difference in the lives of law-abiding citizens."
In the Center's auditorium, a documentary film on the Buffalo Soldiers will run over the course of the day. Re-enactors from Fort Selden will also set a demonstration campsite, weather permitting. There will be refreshments and children’s activities from 11am to 4pm.
The New Mexico Humanities Council makes funding for the Buffalo Soldiers Chautauqua Program available.

El Camino International Heritage Center, the state’s newest State Monument, is located between Socorro and Truth or Consequences off I-25 at Exit 115, then take Highway 1 south 1.5 miles to the back of the Interstate rest area; turn left (east) onto County Road 1598.
Or, take Highway 1 from San Antonio for a scenic drive through the Bosque del Apache NWR and past Fort Craig. The Heritage Centeris about 28 miles from Socorro and approximately the same distance from Truth or Consequences.
