Bernalillo, NM- The Friends of Coronado State Monument will host two educational events at the monument on March 18 and 24. The events are planned as part of the group's ongoing efforts to support the monument and raise funds for its future development and maintenance. The events planned in March include:

The Friends of Coronado State Monument are sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Richard Reycraft, on the topic of "A Cultural and Architectual History of Jemez Valley." This lecture will cover from the first archaeological manifestations of human occupation through the Spanish Colonization of the Jemez region.
Dr. Reycraft is currently the Chief of Preservation and Cultural Resources Manager for New Mexico State Monuments, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. He is a well-known historian and much published author of historical and archeological subjects, and a consultant and lecturer on like topics. As a Fullbright Fellow, he was active in a multiyear archeological research project based in Ilo, Peru, in the early 90"s. From 2001 to 2006, he was the Superintendent/Monument Manager at Jemez State Monument, which contains the ruins of Giusewa (AD 1280-1680), and aancestral Towa p8ueblo of the Jemez Culture, and San Jose de los Jemex (AD 1621-1639), a monumental Spanish Franciscan church and mission complex. His knowledge of the Jemez region is extraordinary.

Mar.24 - The History of Beading and a Beading Workshop, Lecture 1-2pm, Workshop 2-5pm. Lecture Free, Reservation required for workshop, cost $20. Linda Vogel 821-8432, or email dosbears2003@yahoo.com (dosbears2003@yahoo.com).
Plan for an educational, fun, and creative afternoon! Tony and Wilma Purley of Laguna Pueblo will present a lecture on the history of beading (including displays of ancient and recent beadwork), followed by a workshop where participants will enjoy creating their own single strand fetish necklace of heishi beads and turquoise, and matching french wire earrings.
Beading supplies and materials for making the jewelry will bu supplied, and refreshments will be served. Participants will, of course, keep the jewelry that they make.
