The rural community, located in Southern New Mexico is hosting the 4th annual Smokey Bear Days celebration on May 4 & 5th, 2007. “Smokey has always meant a lot to this community. We started this celebration in honor of Smokey’s 60th birthday, and we’ve just continued the party every year”, said organizer David Cunningham.
Because Smokey Bear came from a small town, the annual Smokey Bear Days celebration preserves that intimate “down home” feeling of family fun.
The party starts on Friday, May 4 with plenty of arts and crafts booths for visitors to browse through. Authentic Smokey Bear memorabilia will be available for the serious collector.
Things liven up on Saturday, May 7. What home town celebration would be complete without a parade? The official Smokey Bear Days Parade starts at 10 AM and winds its way down Smokey Bear Boulevard! With all kinds of special entries, the parade is a “must see” part of the weekend.
New this year is the first annual “Ride the Divide” bike ride. The total length of the ride is about 19 miles with a change in elevation of about 900 feet. The fun ride will start as part of the parade and continue on through beautiful Lincoln County.
Following the parade until 6 PM, visitors can enjoy a chainsaw carving competition, an antique and custom car show and free live entertainment all day long at the Smokey Bear Historical Park. The arts and crafts booths will be in full swing, and there’s plenty of fun activities for the kids to enjoy. “This is truly a family event” say organizers.
At 7 PM, an old fashioned street dance is scheduled. Free to the public, the dance features a live band and plenty of opportunity to kick your heels up! “This is something we look forward to every year”, said Cunningham. “The whole town helps to plan and present Smokey Bear Days.
It’s a true hometown celebration, and everybody is invited!
Sponsors of the annual Smokey Bear Days include the Village of Capitan, Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association, the Capitan Chamber of Commerce, Capitan Lion’s Club, Capitan Women’s Club, American Legion Post 57 in Capitan, City Bank New Mexico, Smokey Bear Historical Park, the US Forest Service and the Lodgers Tax Committees of Capitan, Ruidoso and Lincoln County.
