Socorro, New Mexico – Rodolfo Medina created the winning entry for the 2007 New Mexico Junior Duck Stamp Competition. His colored pencil depiction of a green wing teal was chosen over some 450 entries submitted from around the state.

Medina is a student at Gadsden High School in Anthony, NM, and studies under Art D. Perez. Medina will receive a $500 education savings bond donated by the Friends of the Bosque del Apache NWR during an awards ceremony at Macey Center on Saturday, May 12. The 7 pm event is free and open to the public and includes a keynote address on waterfowl and migration by Fish and Wildlife Service John Vradenberg as well as an opening reception for the artists. The winning artwork will be on display in the Macey Center Gallery from May 12th through the 31st.

Prizes were also awarded for the best conservation message. This year’s winning message; "In all our endeavors, we must protect the Earth for future generations, for the fate of mankind goes hand in hand with the fate of nature." was submitted by Vivienne Clark. Vivienne studies at the Young at Art Studio in Corrales, NM. She will receive a $50 gift certificate donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program is a dynamic arts curriculum designed to teach wetlands and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. This program incorporates scientific and wildlife management principles into a visual arts curriculum.

The program is coordinated in New Mexico by Sevilleta Refuge. Students enter their designs in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest at the state level for a chance to win a number of prizes in four different age categories; K-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12. New Mexico winners in these categories will receive a $100 savings bond and have their art work exhibited throughout the State in the coming year.
