Capitan, New Mexico – A beautiful drive through rolling hills, twenty miles North of Ruidoso on Highway 48, lies Capitan, a sunshine kissed rural village harboring craftsmen and artists of every variety in and around it’s central hub.

This little town has two art galleries, and a variety of eateries ranging from barbeque to gourmet. The Horsemen’s Grill, colorful and ambient, serves a great green chili burger and home made pizza, wine and beer.

Gregg Russell and his gallery manager Anne Marie at Oso Art, cull the wilds for collectibles worthy of top collectors to the casual shopper. Always available for a chat and old school banter, these two will receive you with humor and kindness. Be on the lookout for artists popping in and out, too. These talented people are not too busy to sit and talk with you. This is Capitan, and some do say, it’s similar to how Taos used to be.

At the Not 2 Shabby thrift store you might find good recycled clothing or a vintage collectible for less than the cost of a tank of gas, and White Dove, the Menagerie and the Capitan Country Emporium offer eclectic shopping without the crowding of big town hustle.

This little village is a find, and June 9th is a good time to visit. That day Capitan will host "A Taste of CAPITAN" from 10-4pm. Over a dozen restaurants and food shops will offer generous tastes of their specialties in return for a $1 donation to fund raising drives for Capitan’s Library and the Smokey Bear Historical Park Playground. Participating restaurants include: Smokey’s Restaurant, Tom’s BBQ, Calamity Jane’s, El Paisano, Greenhouse Cafe, Rustic Roots, Bill & Ruth’s, Brewer’s, Horsemen’s Grill, The Hitching Post, Smokey’s Country Market, and Capitan’s Farmers Market.

While walking between restaurants, you’ll want to visit the booths of local artists along the boulevard. Many will present demonstrations of their creations. There’s also a Best Salsa Competition to enjoy, or enter to win if you make great salsa! Finally, there will also be entertainment of all kinds to enjoy throughout the day.

To arrange for a booth to exhibit your art or craft, or for more information about the day’s events, call Oso Art at 354-2327 and ask for Gregg or Lyn.
