Re-Imagining the Border/Re-Imaginando La Frontera
The 12th annual Border Book Festival will take place April 21-23, 2006 in Mesilla, New Mexico. The theme looks at the U.S./México border, that 2,000-mile area that is a place of constant change and potential. How do people live with borders and on the border? What purposes do borders serve? What then, would happen if we re-imagined our world borders, our concept of who we were and are within our current borders?
The Border Book Festival is one of the nation’s most unique and well-loved book festivals because of the energy and power of its readings, panels, workshops, literary and storytelling events for all ages as well as its Trade Show, Libros y Más, that attracts presses, authors and presenters from throughout the U.S. and México.
Special evening readings will include a Friday night reading called Probaditas: A Savory Evening of Readings with food with Luis Urrea, Margaret Randall and Denise Chávez, who will offer a “taste” of the richness of our frontera. Probaditas/little snacks will be offered prior to the reading. The Premio Fronterizo reading, the Plato Fuerte, the so-callled “main dish” from a typical menu, will include readings by Rubén Martínez, Norma Cantú and Aristeo Brito followed by a dance Las Cruces’ well known and loved group, Dulce.
Other readings include a Gen Mex Reading with writers Emmy Pérez, Christine Granados, Carolina Monsivaís and Michelle Otero. The host is Rich Yañez.
In addition to these rich and hearty readings, the festival will offer performance readings on the plaza and entertainment including Chiquitín, a dance troupe of 40 children from La Mesa, as well as Ballet Folklorico Viva Los Niños from El Paso. Musical entertaiment includes singer Yolanda Martínez, Saúl Rodríguez and many others.
The festival will feature many Mexican writers including poets Elsa Cross and Francisco Serrano, who will tour the U.S. on a grant sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Their work appears in an anthology, Conectando Lineas/Connecting Lines. The featured writers will read from their work with Benjamin Alire Sáenz on the afternoon Saturday, April 22.
President of Lerdo’s Casa de Cultural, Mrs. Lourdes Pimental de Rivera will present Mexican writers Fernando Martínez and María Caliano from Las Cruces’ sister city, Lerdo, Durango, as they present their work in an tardeada/afternoon reading. Juárez poets Selfa Chew and Osvaldo Ogaz will also participate. In addition, local poets José García García and Adriana Candia will participate on a panel on contemporary border literature moderated by Jorge Robles.
This year’s Special events include the first ever children’s parade with Gigantes, giant puppets. Micaela Seidel, puppeteer and artist will work with the Evenstart Family Literacay program to construct gigantes, giant puppets, that will be used in the parade, which will take place Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. on the Mesilla Plaza. Seidel will be available to work with schools and community centers to work on parade costumes during April 3-5 as well. The Border, in all its richness, variety and color is the real star of this 12th annual festival. And in keeping with the theme, the BBF is offering a rich plate of multi-cultural border events.
