Special to Steppin' Out
Mountainair - In the Manzano Mountains August means <img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/sunflowercover_web.jpg align=left hspace=4>sunflowers, and in Mountainair August means the Sunflower Festival.
Cibola Arts Gallery will have an opening reception for their group "Sunflower Show" on Aug. 11th from 2-4 pm. This show will run through Sept. 13th, so if you make it to Mountainair for the Sunflower Festival on Aug. 25th you'll have a chance to see it then.
There will be lots of new art work as part of the Sunflower Shower as the Cibola artists have been busy preparing work with this theme in mind. All three photography artists, Marilyn Conway, Ann Adams, and Mary Schultz, will have framed and unframed prints and greeting cards featuring this flower of the hour.
And there will also be Addie Draper's oil and pastel Southwestern landscapes, Lois Minnick's and Shirley Simmon's New Mexico landscapes in oil, and Timothy Wylie's sacred imagery to capture the light and texture of August in New Mexico.
Cibola Arts ceramicists, Jude Wasechek, Doris Burton-Minnick, Ron Minnick, and Rob Drexel will offer functional ceramic art, raku, sculpture, horsehair and pit fired pottery, and Celeste Simons, a multi-media artist, will have art work in wood, ceramics, and painting.
To round out the gallery offerings there is Anne Ravenstone offering tin and barnwood art, Terry Grate creating wood-burned and painted functional art, and gourd artist Susan Probert.
Quilt and decoupage artist Meg Chobanian not only will be creating art for this show, but has created the Sunflower quilt that is part of a raffle for the Sunflower Festival. If you haven't bought your raffle ticket for this beautiful piece, be sure to buy some when you come to Mountainair.
Lastly, jewelry artists Mary Schultz, Doris Minnick, and Rose Smith offer eye-catching jewelry from fused glass, wire wrap, and intricate combinations of beads from around the world.
Come out to Mountainair and experience the wonders of August in the Manzanos!<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/sunflowerclose_web.jpg align=right hspace=4>

In September
Cibola Arts Gallery will have an opening reception for Addie Draper's "Clouds" show on Sept. 15th from 2-4 pm. This show will run through October 17th.
Addie Draper is currently working in oils - after many years of exploring pastels. She has shown her pastels throughout the country and her work is in many private and corporate collections. The possibilities for texture and expressive movement with oils intrigued her into pursuing this medium.
Her series '"Clouds" explores the wonderful diversity of the local "skyscapes." "The skies here are magic - with a different mood every day," says Draper. "I have tried to capture a few of these in this series."
As in her pastels, Addie is interested in spareness of form, trying to capture the mood and feel of a scene with minimal elements. She is also interested in movement within the picture and has found oils to be wonderful form of expression.
