Chloride Gallery Put on the Map Again!
Special to Steppin' Out

Chloride, August 26: The old nearly-forgotten Sierra County 'ghost town' of Chloride was put on the New Mexico map the first time over 125 years ago for its silver treasures as a mining boom town in 1880. Chloride has been put on the map again, this time for its treasure of fiber arts. The Monte Cristo Gift Shop & Gallery was recently selected as a site on the New Mexico Fiber Arts Trail. The Fiber Arts Trail winds its way around the state highlighting the best fiber art sources in rural areas.

The Monte Cristo is a co-op of local artisans, many that create beautiful fiber art pieces. Award winning quilter Cathy Pierce stitches up quilts of all sizes, including wall quilts, and other decorative and useful items. Gloria Petersen weaves rag rugs and knits cozy slippers. Both Tommie Aber and Kitty Jones create masterpieces from blank pieces of fabric using counted cross-stitch. Kaye Diamond, Crystal Diamond, and Dallas Rutherford do beadwork. Linda Turner creates hand stamped and painted garments, off-loom weavings, and hand-crafted cards. Anita Manzenberger hand spins and hand dyes the yarn she uses to create caps, scarves, and purses. She also does felting and needle punch work. Aspen ni Wood works in miniature and her pieces often include miniature fiber arts. Cherry Carson makes gift bags and embellishes them with old jewelry and found items. Sue Hawkins creates wonderful batik paintings while Holly Humphrey paints on leather hides.

Also featured on the Fiber Arts Trail is the Pioneer Store Museum which houses displays of clothing from the late 1800's and the fiber art of Cassie Hobbs (1904-1989), a true pioneer woman. The Monte Cristo Gift Shop & Gallery and the Pioneer Store Museum are located in Chloride, NM, 35 miles west of Truth or Consequences via Hwy 52. The Monte Cristo is open 10 AM to 4 PM seven days/week. For more information: 505-743-0493 or montecristo@zianet.com (montecristo@zianet.com)
