Park Plans Independence Day Fiesta

COLUMBUS, NM – Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus, New Mexico is hosting its 2nd annual Mexican Independence Day Fiesta beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, complete with a car show, food, crafts, music and entertainment.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of freedom and independence with our Mexican neighbors to the south,” said Park Manager Victor Trujillo. “Our two countries are culturally and historically linked together.”

The “Pancho’s Car Show” judging will begin at 10:00 a.m. and includes classic, custom and vintage cars and trucks. Trophies, goodie bags, t-shirts and raffle tickets will be given to car show registrants. Best of show winner receives a large trophy and all entrants are eligible for the $100 grand prize.

Those interested in registering for the car show should do so at 8:00 a.m. on the morning of the event. The registration fee is $20. Pre-registration forms are available by contacting Heritage Educator Sylvia Brenner at (505) 531-2711.

The event also includes performances by folklorico dancers from Mexico, fiddlers, arts and crafts and food vendors. Following the event at the park, visitors are encouraged to cross the border and celebrate Mexican Independence Day in Palomas, Mexico, where a carnival and food booths will be featured in the village plaza.

Just before midnight on the evening of September 15, 1810, Mexican priest, Father Miguel Hidalgo, called on his congregation to fight for independence from Spain. Following the 11-year Mexican War of Independence, Mexico was finally liberated from Spanish rule in 1821. Mexicans recognize and celebrate independence from Spain each year on September 16.

In 2006, during the grand opening of the park’s 7,000 square foot museum, Governor Bill Richardson and Chihuahua Governor José Reyes Baeza Terrazas signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) pledging further cooperation between New Mexico and Chihuahua on historic/cultural programs related to Pancho Villa State Park. As part of the MOU, State Parks is honoring Mexico’s Independence Day.

Day use and/or camping fees apply, which includes access to events at Pancho Villa State Park.
