Albuquerque/Bernallilo, NM-THE FRIENDS OF CORONADO STATE MONUMENT Present a FIESTA OF CULTURES
(Come celebrate your heritage – whatever it may be!)
Saturday, October 27, 2008
10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Bernallilo/Albuquerque, New Mexico-The Friends of Coronado State Monument and the Monument staff invite the public to enjoy a “Fiesta of Cultures” unique event on the portal of the Coronado State Monument on Saturday, October 27, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Come and spent some time with us! Enjoy the panorama of the river, the cottonwood bosque, and the entire breadth of the Sandia Mountains while you gain a fascinating insight into the area’s Pueblo, Hispanic and early Anglo cultures!
As part of their co-existence, the Native American, Hispanic and Anglo’s traditional skills have been handed down through the centuries. The Fiesta will feature numerous demonstrations of these skills through expert craftspeople such as craft artists, weavers, spinners, quilters, a tin worker, a blacksmith, flintnappers and potters. In addition, there will be musical entertainment and fun activities specifically for children (of all ages!). A food court will offer delicious homemade lunch options, including freshly made Indian fry bread.
Please join us in this celebration of Kuaua’s history (1300 to 1600 AD), Coronado’s visit (1540-1542 AD), and Anglo arrival to the Rio Grande Valley (late 1800’s via the Sante Fe Trail). History will come alive for you! Our cultures are so rich – this event promises not only a festive occasion with good food and entertainment, but also a true learning experience while observing the crafts, habits, and historical traditions of our ancestors, whether they be Hispanic, native American, or Anglo.
Coronado State Monument is located on Route 550 about one mile west of I-25 (Exit 242). While attending the Fiesta, if you wish to visit the Kuaua Pueblo ruins or examine the original Kiva Murals, usual Monument admission fees apply ($3 for adults; free for ages 17 and under). Otherwise, there is no admission charge for the Fiesta. For more information, contact Coronado’s manager, Scott Smith, at (505) 867-5351.
