Magdalena, New Mexico – Magdalena is a wonderful little village on Hwy 60 and sees many travelors along the transcontinental highway. A new art gallery and gift shop has just opened, adding to the growing art presence of this high-country town.

Wild Horse Gallery is the creation of Ed Ericksen, a well-known Socorroan and artist who is “having a ball” with his newest venture. The gallery, in the renovated former office for the Palomino Motel, has an inviting porch and large display windows, already reflecting the glass work of Lucy Garica and others. Inside, two rooms hold an assortment of gifts and souvenirs. It’s all nicely arranged so customers can take their time and look. One of the first things you’ll notice is the collection of crystals and fossils set on shelves around the room. Rocks and minerals are some of his fastest moving items, Ericksen said.

He recently added Native American paintings and also sells some of his own work. Uniquely fashioned turquoise necklaces and finely inlaid bracelets are displayed behind the counter. And much of the room is devoted to shelves of pottery, placemats and other weavings, along with more crystals. Post cards and note cards, candles and chile products from New Mexico add to the mix of useful, and fun gifts.

The Wild Horse Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Drop in and say Hi to Ed and enjoy his new venture, you’re sure to find something you like and something for a gift as well.

Addendum: About 10 days after the Oct/Nov print issue was out on the streets, Ed called me up and at first pretended to be all blustery about the ad and its cost: "How much did I pay for that ad?" he demanded. When I tried to find out what the problem might be, there was an almost strangling noise at the other end of the phone line. Just as I had decided he was having a heart attack and how to handle that on the phone, he laughed and said: "I made enough money off that ad today to pay for four more months of advertising!" Ol' Ed, you know, tries to be stern but can't keep a straight face over the phone. Seems three lady visitors from other countries (I think he said Canada and Australia but I forget exactly) came into the Wild Horse Gallery and told him they had picked up Steppin' Out and were "looking at the advertising to see where to shop."
And shop they did – resulting in one great day at Wild Horse and a great story for us at Steppin' Out. We like to make our customers happy!
